Sea Pictures, Op. 37 is a song cycle by Sir Edward Elgar (1857-1934)
Pre-dating The Dream of Gerontius by a year, Sea Pictures is, for the most part, a much more intimate affair, though the premiere in 1899 was enlivened by the soloist Clara Butt dressing up as a mermaid. The poems chosen by Elgar are not of the first order of greatness, but as the composer himself said, ‘it is better to set the best second-rate poetry to music, for the most immortal verse is music already.’
